Tri-City Herald Story Written By Jack Millikin On The Pasco Moses Lake Dual
Pasco slams Moses Lake 40-17
This story was published Wednesday, January 10th, 2007
By Jack Millikin, Herald staff writer
Bob Bodnar hears what people say.
He reads the Internet posts regarding his desire to defeat state wrestling power Moses Lake, and the Pasco coach was a happier man after his Bulldogs beat the Chiefs 40-17 in a Columbia Basin 4A League dual meet in Pasco.
It's just the fourth dual-meet loss since August 1990 for Moses Lake, which is 117-4-1 since then. Three of those losses have come at the hands of Pasco in the last four years.
But as far as the rumor mill goes, Bodnar says, don't believe everything you read.
"I hear those comments all the time, and to say all I want to do is beat Moses Lake is ridiculous," he said. "I've always respected everything they've done. My dream is to keep building our whole program like Moses Lake has done."
Chiefs coach Jamie Wise, a former three-time state champion at Moses Lake (1978-1980), would welcome more programs like Pasco.
"I really wish there were more battles like this in the (CBL) like there used to be," Wise said. "If I had my druthers, I wish we weren't wrestling now. We're hurting at a couple of different weights.
"But I take my hat off to them. They beat us where we should have beaten them."
The meet featured a highly-anticipated match between Pasco's Dimitri Miles, who finished third at Mat Classic last year, and Brett Fredericksen -- last year's 4A regional champ -- at 215 pounds.
After a scoreless first period, Miles scored a second-period takedown to take a 2-1 lead before Fredericksen evened it again with an escape. In the end, it was Miles who won it 3-2 with a third-period escape.
"He tried to throw me a couple times, but I tried not to tie up with him," said Miles, who improved to 17-0. "When I got that takedown, it helped me get more confidence."
Moses Lake opened with a 3-0 lead when Josh Neilsen decisioned Ray Manzo 6-4 in the 160-pound match.
But the Bulldogs won five of the next six matches, building a 22-6 lead on Josh Martinez's 9-1 decision over Tyler Vela at 112.
"This is our state championship. This was our first goal," said Bulldogs heavyweight Tony Fiore, who scored a third-period reversal to edge Tad Harmon 5-4 and give Pasco a 12-6 lead.
Pasco's Armando Luna faced Cody Hoiness at 145 pounds in a battle of state placers. Luna trailed 6-5 after the first period, but he recovered for a 10-8 win.
"As a freshman, I remember losing to his brother (Sean)," Luna said. "It's always good to beat a Hoiness."
Justin Schadler pinned John Silva at 1:13 in the 140-pound match to clinch the Bulldogs win with two matches remaining.
"This is huge, especially since we're here in front of our home crowd," Schadler said.

Remember I said this story was going to be a work in progress. I got sidetracked for a while finding some comments on a blog busting on the Tri-City Herald for not covering wrestling in the area and a comment about Pasco not dominating in the last number of years. That one did make me chuckle a little.
This is an excerpt out of the Tri-City Herald I believe February 1st.
--The latest Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association poll has Pasco ranked second in the state among 4A teams. According to Bulldogs assistant coach Jack Anderson, it's the highest-ever state ranking for Pasco wrestling.
Topping the polls were Lake Stevens (4A), Sedro Wooley (3A), WF West (2A), Lakeside (9-Mile Falls) (1A) and Concrete (B).
The only other Mid-Columbia teams to crack the top-10 were Moses Lake (5th in 4A poll) and Royal (3rd in 1A poll).
I can't stand this any longer, anyone who doesn't think that we have been a force in wrestling since 1993 can come to the weight room at Pasco High and see the Pasco High Wrestling Hall of Fame Banners and decide for yourself. I think there might be very few schools in this state to show that type of success.
I will get back to the facts, Every once in a while I get stirred up by the politicians , prognosticators, arm chair quarterbacks and those that outright don't know what they are talking about.

ďPeople have to be given the freedom to show the heart they possess. I think itís a leaderís responsibility to provide that type of freedom. And I believe it can be done through relationships and family. Because if a team is a real family, itís members want to show you their hearts.Ē
